Donald Ker and Syd Downey ran one of the best known safari companies in Kenya, and this account by Kenya author Jan Hemsing gives a fascinating and detailed history of the company, its activities, its clients, and a generation of well-known Kenyan safari figures. Ker & Downey has prospered over the years, now specializing in camera safaris and helping with films such as OUT OF AFRICA. They employed the best of the best professional hunters including Philip Percival, Tony Dyer, Tony Seth Smith, Tony Archer, Terry Mathews and more.

DONALD IAN KER was born in Hertfordshire, England in 1905. In 1911, the family move to British East Africa (KENYA). From Mombasa they went to Nairobi, building a house at Groganville.

With his 3 brothers and 1 sister, they went to Nairobi government school. In 1921, he went for his first elephant hunt, shooting his first elephant in LORIAN SWAMP. Before 20 years old, Donald was conducting his own safaris. In 1941, in 2nd World War, he was enlisted as a scout and captain. SYDNEY PAUL DOWNEY was born on 13.12.1905 in Argentine and went to school/college in Brighton, England. At the age of 19, in 1925, he followed his brother to Nairobi, Kenya. After working on a farm, he took up professional hunting and worked with PHIL PERCIVAL in Maasai Mara(1933). By 1948, he got sick of hunting and by 1960 he started camera safaris. In 1935, he got married, but devorced in 1946. He married again CYNTHIA in 1951 and had a daughter, Margaret in 1953.

After 2nd World War, he looked after POW at NANYUKI and then Longonot. He was made honorary game warden in Kenya. In 1946, Ker and Downey had their first client safari to Maasai Mara.

Many "WHITE HUNTERS" joined the K+D safaris Ltd. The Company also opened in Maun, Botswana. Kenya hunting ban came in 1977. In 1964, professional hunter name was prefered to white hunter.

After the hunting ban, sightseeing and photographic safaris started. In 1962, Donald Ker married client EDIE from Washington USA. Films shot in East Africa with the help of Ker and Downey include,'King Solomon's mines'(1949),'Call Me Bwana'(1961),'Sammy Going South'(1962),'Mogambo'(1952),'Hatari'(1962),'Cowboy in Africa'(1967),'The Last Safari'(1967),'Ashanti'(1979) and'Out of Africa'. The book also contains many well known hunters who worked for Ker and Downey and their background and their lives.

Donald Ker's younger brothers Allan and Dennis took out clients for photographic safaris. Donald Ker and Syd Downey retired in 1973/74. Donald died in New Zealand on 12.3.1981. His ashes were flown to Kenya after his death from heart attack, his ashes scattered over Maasai Mara. Syd died in Kenya on 7.1.1983. He had sleeping sickness in the 40's.

Before his death, Syd had appendicitis, peritonitis, pulmonary embolus and then heart attack. Ker and Downey safaris Ltd today working around mobile luxury camps in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and other parts of Africa. The Company is based at Nairobi, Kenya.
