In 1836, Harris ventured to South Africa where he spent nearly two years hunting antelope and following the leads of Matabele people. One of the defining traits of Harris, which differentiated him from other hunters, was that he illustrated the large African animals that he hunted, many of which were remarkably accurate for the time. The events of this expedition were published in a book entitled Wild Sports of Southern Africa a work that featured Harriss own illustrations of animals and tribal people. And, while this book is fascinating, it is often considered to be the very first book written exclusively of big game hunting! This 1852 fifth edition includes the complete collection of Harriss color plates and a map bound in fine leather! The wild sports of southern Africa: being the narrative of a hunting expedition from the Cape of Good Hope, through the territories of the Chief Moselekatse, to the Tropic of Capricorn. Collation: Complete with all pages. Illustrated with 26 engravings & 1 Map. Binding: Leather; tight and secure.
